OUTLANDER TRADING CARDS SEASON 4
Assignment: Card design / Mockup Images / Web Banners
Early in 2020, Cryptozoic started work on the 4th season of trading cards for Outlander. As the first designer assigned to the project, I had the opportunity to establish the look of the set going forward, and design the majority of the set.
Starting with production stills and key art, I created a mood board to help guide me towards a rustic, earthy aesthetic appropriate for this season’s rural American Frontier setting. I explored various options for the autograph, base, and chase cards, and once we settled on a design, I created 3D art to show off the set, and web banners for marketing.
final Autograph card design and research / mood board
The first cards designed were the autograph cards, shown here alongside a mood board and color palette used for preliminary research.
After a less successful initial design, this mood board (and accompanying assets and images supplied by the licensor) were instrumental in helping me to execute a successful card design.
BASE CARDS AND EARLY EXPLORATION
On the left are the final front and back of the base cards, the most common in the set. To the right are a variety of early explorations. In the end, I opted for a simpler, more minimal frame which would allow the photos plenty of space, while also giving ample room for the logo and caption.
Cyan areas indicate placement of deco foil for more rare variants, and magenta areas indicate placement of limited edition crash numbering.
