Ys VIII Limited Edition
The Ys VIII Limited Edition included a Steelbook case, a hardcover journal written by the main character, a softcover art booklet, acrylic bookends to display the set, a soundtrack, and a big box to carry it all in.
Assignment: Design a Steelbook, soundtrack, the back of the PS4 box, and a box to contain the set in. Additionally, lay out an art book and journal using existing assets translated from Japanese and create a 3D beauty shot in Blender and web graphics for use on the NIS America online store and across the internet.
Inspiration: Collector’s edition sets from AAA games such as Overwatch and Diablo, and luxury wristwatch boxes.
Inspiration for the Ys VIII Limited Edition Box
Double Neck Box
This GIF was created for internal use, to show the licensor and factory how the “double neck box” was intended to open and function. As it spins, it also shows some of the “invisible” spot UV coating along the sides and front of the box.
PS4 Back of Box
The back of the game’s box needed to include screenshots, catch copy, the main character, advertise bonus content, and call out the special edition it was included with, as well as a translation of all of the above in French and the standard PlayStation template items… but first and foremost, it needed to evoke the feeling of adventure.
Web Graphic for Ys VIII Day One Edition
This graphic was created to help market the Day One Steelbook Edition of the game. A new 3D render was made showing a smaller softcover artbook and truncated soundtrack. The 3D and logo were put onto a map from the game to give it an extra feeling of adventure and to make the Steelbook pop.
Day One Edition
Another 3D showing an even smaller set was also created - this one depicts the standard “Day One” edition of the game, which did not include a Steelbook.
