DC Comics Bombshells II Trading Cards
This set of trading cards was based on DC Comics’ “Bombshells” series, which takes place in the 1940s. A set of 64 base cards plus 54 other chase cards were designed. A 3D render showing the packaging and included figure were made in Blender and shown on web graphics.
Assignment: Design a full set of trading cards with chases and variants based on the DC Comics Bombshells series.
Inspiration: 1930s-1950s design, including movie posters, newspapers, Bauhaus design principles, and art deco.
Different colored foil stamps were used to create rare variants, as well as a rainbow foil board with opaque white ink.
Above: Research examples of period newspapers and posters.
Several spot channels were required for the printers to identify foil stamps and opaque white ink. Print rotations, shown below, were sometimes created to illustrate this.
The chase sets below were inspired by art deco design, retro movie posters, vintage baseball cards, and Bauhaus minimalism.
Graphics were created for marketing use online – to draw more attention, the subdued retro look was replaced with a brighter, punchier palette.
